ADD/ADHD Q&A

What is ADHD?

Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurological condition characterized by inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. ADHD is frequently diagnosed in childhood. Its symptoms sometimes improve with age, but many adults continue to struggle with ADHD. Some patients receive their initial ADHD diagnosis as adults or even seniors.

What are the symptoms associated with ADHD?

ADHD interferes with concentration and focus, causing difficulty following instructions, staying on task, and maintaining organization. In children, ADHD can interfere with learning and school performance as well as social interaction. Adults may find that ADHD causes difficulty in their job performance, prevents them from achieving their goals, and creates problems in their interpersonal relationships.

ADHD generally causes inattentive, hyperactive, and impulsive symptoms.

Examples of inattentive symptoms include:

  • Disorganization
  • Poor listening and concentration
  • Avoiding mentally demanding tasks

Examples of hyperactivity include:

  • Fidgeting
  • Inability to sit still
  • Excessive talking

Examples of impulsive symptoms include:

  • Interrupting
  • Quick decision making
  • Risky behaviors

Symptoms may be more pronounced in childhood, especially hyperactivity. An increased risk for mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety, and addiction is associated with a diagnosis of ADHD.

How is ADHD treated?

The Root Awakening, LLC team has extensive experience in the evaluation and treatment of ADHD. Following a comprehensive assessment and diagnosis, they design personalized treatment plans tailored to each patient's unique needs.

Depending on your age, the severity of symptoms, overall health, and other personal considerations, ADHD treatment may include:

  • Individual therapy
  • Family therapy
  • Prescription medications

Many families trust Root Awakening, LLC, for long-term medication management and psychotherapy. The team can also provide resources for additional mental health services, education system support for parents, and other services that help families develop strategies for success after ADHD diagnosis.

Is medication required to address ADHD?

Not all patients with a diagnosis of ADHD require medication. As you and your family gain an understanding of how ADHD affects executive function skills, such as organization and focus, you can work to develop skills that allow you to complete tasks, follow instructions, remember important dates, and maintain personal relationships.

For some patients, medication makes a big difference when combined with ADHD coping strategies.
